In Norse mythology, Valkyries (also called “Odin’s maidens”) would fly on their horses over battlefields to choose heroic souls of the slain to bring to Valhalla. But if a Viking warrior’s soul was considered unworthy, it would be sent to the dismal underground world ruled by the goddess Hel.
